Western Cape learners empowered to take up music careers through Cape Town International Jazz Festival
March 2020: Over 50 learners were given a platform to explore careers in the music industry, through a legacy programme run by the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF). The CTIJF Sustainable Training and Development Programme allows Grade 10 to 12 learners from five Western Cape schools to attend four weekend Music and Careers workshops, in which facilitators presented on a range of career options, which included performing, sound engineering, lighting and festival management. At the end of the four-week programme, learners participate in a live performance and are selected to join the CTIJF All Star band, which will perform at the Free Community Concert on 25 March 2020.
This year, the learners from Bergvliet High School, Belhar High School, Hawston Catapult Foundation Music School, Pneumatix Performing Arts Academy, and Worcester Senior Secondary School participated in the programme.
The programme also provided each school with a mentor to the learners. This established artist attended the learners’ band rehearsals outside of the workshops. The school who displays outstanding talent will be invited to perform at the next year’s Free Community Concert. Performing at this year’s concert will be the energetic band from Wynberg High School.
The award-winning Festival will be celebrating 21 years of bringing the best of jazz and jazz-related music to the Mother City, on 27 and 28 March 2020 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). For more information, visit www.capetownjazzfest.com.
